The Bells at Home with Duncan
Oh, what a tangled web we weave when we are members of the Bloomsbury Group. This set, with its many tortuous and convoluted relationships, has always fascinated me. In this tableau I have depicted Clive Bell, the literary critic, with his artist wife, Vanessa Stephens, who was also the sister of Virginia Woolf. The third figure is Duncan Grant who was the lover of Vanessa among others. He lived and raised children with the Bells in their famously self-decorated home, 'Charleston'. I have also used Vanessa's art style in the painting. Not easily seen in this copy of the painting, are the figures
in the top right hand corner, of a pair of wolves on bicycles. This
was my artist's joke showing the Woolfs coming to tea.
